Laredo Bucks News Release
HIDALGO, Texas â The defending CHL Champion Laredo Bucks were defeated 6-4 by the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees at the Dodge Arena. Killer Bees forward Joe Guenther had a hat trick as Rio ended the Bucks season high eight game winning streak. The Bucks are 14-10-1 with 29 points and remain in a first place tie in the Southeast division. Laredo returns home to the LEC this Friday on New Years Eve again taking on the Killer Bees. Face off is set for 7:30 p.m. For Laredo Bucks season or single game tickets call (956)-718-BUCKS (2825) or log onto www.laredobucks.com and buy tickets online.
The Bucks struck first just after a power play chance expired. Defenseman Phillippe Lauze fired a wrist shot from the top of the right circle that deflected off traffic in front and into the net at 6:16 to make it 1-0 Laredo. It was the fifth of the year for Lauze. Just 91 seconds later Guenther picked up a loose puck walked in front and stuffed the puck into the net to tie the game at one goal apiece.
The Bees wasted no time taking the lead in the second period. Defenseman Derek Holland snapped a wrist shot from the point that was tipped by forward Ryan Shymr for a power play goal just 43 second into the frame. At 7:16 Guenther grabbed the puck behind the net again, and again scored on a stuff try for another power play goal and a 3-1 Rio Grande Valley lead. Late in the period the Bucks were able to get back in the game. Forward Brent Cullaton gunned a pass from the left corner that was tipped into the net by forward James Hiebert at 15:05. It was the fifth of the year for Hiebert and cut the Killer Bees led to 3-2. The Killer Bees tacked on a big goal just 1:50 later though to extend their lead back to two goals. Forward Troy Linna chased down the loose puck in the Bucks end then scored to give Rio Grande Valley a 4-2 lead.
In the third period again the Killer Bees struck quickly. Forward Jason Hawes fired a wrist shot from the high slot that snuck thru five-hole on Bucks goalie Jeremy Symington at 3:40 for a 5-2 lead. The Bucks refused to quit. Hiebert scored his second of the game on a rebound at 7:28 to pull Laredo within 5-3. Then at 10:38 forward Brent Cullaton slipped a great lead pass ahead to forward Scott Kelman for a breakaway. Kelman faked to his backhand, then fore handed the puck into the cage for his eighth of the year to bring Laredo within 5-4. That was a close as they would get as Guenther wrapped up the scoring and completed the hat trick with a terrific wrist shot during a two-on-one rush at 14:57. FINAL SCORE Rio Grande Valley 6, Laredo 4.
Symington allowed six goals on 36 shots as his eight game win streak came to an end. He is 10-4-0 on the season. Jeff Levy picked up the win by stopping 25 of 29 shots and improved to 8-12-0. It was the 100th professional win for Levy. The Bucks were 1-7 on the power play while Rio Grande Valley was 3-5.
