Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release
RIO GRANDE VALLEY KILLER BEES
GAME NIGHT PREVIEW
Laredo Bucks (14-9-1) @ Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees (8-15-1)
DATE: 12/28/04 TIME: 7:30 pm LOCATION: Dodge Arena (Hidalgo, Tx)
THE BUCKS STOP HERE
Tonight, the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees host the rival Laredo Bucks, who are riding an eight-game winning streak that has them co-leading the Southeast Division. The Killer Bees, who were 15 points out of first place at this point last season, are 12 points back behind the co-leading Bucks and Corpus Christi Rayz and have this week as an opportunity to gain some ground. Tonight kicks off a week that has the Bees playing four games in five nights and all against playoff contending teams. Laredo is looking for a victory, not only to extend their streak, to give them sole possession of first place in the division since Corpus Christi does not play tonight.
THE SERIES
The Killer Bees and the Bucks meet for the first time since October 29th at the Dodge Arena and for the first time since their December 17th match-up, which the Bees set a team record with 95 penalty minutes. It is the second of six visits to the Dodge Arena by the Bucks this season. Laredo Leads the all-time series with a 11-3-2 record, with Jeff Bes leading the all-time series with 32 points (11g,21a). The Killer Bees, who are led by Bill Newson (6g,6a,12pts) against the Bucks all-time, are 5-10-1 all-time against the Bucks and are 1-2-0 this season in the series. Rio Grande Valley is 3-5-0 all-time over the regular season at the Dodge Arena and have won three of the last four meetings at the Dodge. The Bees are led in the season series by Sean Gillam (2g,3a,5pts), while Adam Paiement leads the way for the Bucks in the season series, leading all scorers with 8 points (5g,3a).
THE LAST REGULAR SEASON MEETING
12/17/04 - The Laredo Bucks tallied seven power play goals off ten opportunities to defeat the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees 8-2 in a fight-filled contest at the Laredo Entertainment Center.
If the fans forgot these two teams were heavy rivals, they were reminded four-seconds into the contest, as Ryan Shmyr dropped the gloves and laid his fists upon Bucks rookie Hans Benson. Shmyr's actions gave the Bees some momentum and they responded by scoring the game's opening goal. Sean Gillam, who opened up the Bees scoring with a power play goal in the previous contest, scored a power play goal 7:05 into the game to give the Bees a 1-0 lead. It marked just the seventh time the Bucks have allowed the game's opening goal. Things went eerie for the Bees late in the period, as they were whistled for four consecutive penalties and it led to a five-on-three power play opportunity. Adam Paiement converted the Bucks opportunity with a goal 1:07 remaining in the period to tie the contest 1-1.
The power plays for Laredo continued in the second period. Laredo was issued five consecutive power play opportunities, including a five-minute major penalty when Ryan Shmyr was ejected for slew-footing. Laredo tallied four power play goals in a span of 6:02 Levy was bowled over twice during two of the Bucks goals and Levy erupted towards official Mark Hulshof, leading to a penalty on Levy. The goals by Laredo were scored by Phillippe Lauze, Jeff Bes and a pair by Paiement to complete the hat trick. Paiement became just the third ever opposing player to record a hat trick against the Bees. The Bees finally received second period power play opportunities, after the Bucks tied up 7:50 of time on the power play, and Derek Holland converted on an opportunity with 7:46 into the period to cut the Bucks lead to 5-2.
The third period was a riot...literally. 2:46 into the period Hawes collided with Bucks goaltender Jeremy Symington leading into a full out line brawl. Even goaltenders Jeff Levy and Symington met up at center ice with Levy pounding Symington to the ice. Head Coach Tracy Egeland was so frustrated, he littered the ice with all the sticks and then was hit in the head by debris thrown by a Bucks fan behind the bench almost leading to pandemonium in the stands. After a lengthy delay, play finally resumed and Laredo closed out the game with a pair of goals. Benson added the Bucks seventh power play goal of the game and Bes registered his second goal of the game with 5:14 remaining to close out the contest 8-2.
