Tulsa Drillers News Release
For five innings Thursday night's game was a pitchers duel, and for the remaining nine innings it was a rollercoaster ride. Scott Beerer's three-run double in the top of the fourteenth inning gave the Tulsa Drillers a 5-2 victory over the Midland RockHounds at Citibank Ballpark.
Tulsa's game winning rally began when Bronson Sardinha drew a lead of walk and then Ryan Harvey doubled to put runners on the corners with no outs. After an intentional walk to Daniel Mayora and a strikeout, Beerer drove a ground ball into the right field corner. The bases-clearing double allowed all three runners to score and gave the Drillers a 5-2 lead.
Stu Pomeranz entered the game for the Drillers and threw a perfect bottom of the fourteenth inning to pick up his second save of the season.
Midland actually loaded the bases in the bottom of the thirteenth, but could not capitalize. Jeff Baisley led off with a triple and the Hounds eventually loaded the bases with one out, but Tulsa reliever Sean Jarrett was able to get a strikeout and a pop out to keep the game knotted at 2-2.
Nearly three hours earlier, Tulsa starting pitcher Bruce Billings proved why he is the hottest pitcher in the Texas League. Billings threw five scoreless innings, allowing only two hits while striking out five batters. In his last four starts, the right-hander has thrown 24 straight innings of shutout baseball.
Billings retired the first nine batters to start the game, but a single in the top of the fourth inning broke up his hopes of a perfect game.
The RockHounds took advantage of Billings' early exit. Facing Tulsa reliever Chris Malone, J.C. Holt drew a led off walk to start the sixth inning. Holt then stole second, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a single by Alex Valdez that gave the Hounds a 1-0 lead.
Tulsa quickly responded in the top of the seventh to take a 2-1 lead. Sardinha led off with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch before racing home on a line drive double by Harvey. The Drillers were able to score the go-ahead run without a hit. Harvey moved to third base on a pass ball by Midland catcher Yusuf Carter and then scored on a wild pitch by starter Travis Banwart.
Archie Gilbert led off the bottom of the seventh inning with double down the leftfield line to put the Drillers into a bind. After a groundout, Carter drew a walk to put runners on the corners with one out. Tulsa reliever Scott Rice entered the game and Matthew Sulentic welcomed him by belting his first pitch into centerfield. The single allowed Carter to score and tie the game at 2-2. After a strikeout for the second out of the inning, Josh Horton drew a walk to load the bases. Rice was able to get out of the jam, however, getting Alex Valdez to fly out to second baseman Anthony Jackson.
The Drillers appeared to score the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth, but that was not the case. Sardinha tripled to centerfield and with two outs Daniel Mayora hit a ground ball to second baseman Holt that allowed Sardinha to cross home plate. Holt's throw was offline and the first base umpire called Mayora safe at first base. After Midland manager Darren Bush questioned the call, the umpires huddled and overturned the safe call and called Mayora out for the third out of the inning.
Tulsa relievers Sean Jarrett worked three scoreless innings to pick up his third win of the season. Both teams combined for 34 strikeouts in the four hour and thirty-eight minute game. The Drillers will conclude their three-game series with the RockHounds on Friday. Keith Weiser (3-3, 3.06 ERA) will take the mound for Tulsa against Midland's Ryan Edell (0-0, 0.00 ERA). First pitch is schedule for 7:00PM at Citibank Ballpark.
