NFL, NBA, NHL stats AFL Collectible Player of the Week

April 4, 2006 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I) News Release

On the surface, Ben Nelson's 2006 statistical line doesn't seem too remarkable - 51 catches, 745 yards and 13 touchdowns. Only when you consider that Nelson has compiled those numbers in the last five weeks alone can you truly begin to appreciate the tear he's on.

With all due respect to Damian Harrell, Clint Dolezel or Chris Jackson, there's not a hotter player in the AFL right now than Nelson. The 6-3, 188-pound rookie out of St. Cloud State capped a sizzling five-game start to his career on Sunday by catching 11 passes for 203 yards and five touchdowns in San Jose's 61-49 victory over Arizona.

For his performance, Nelson has been honored as the AFL Collectible Player of the Week for Week 10.

Nelson - who's averaging 10 catches, 149 yards and better than two touchdowns per game this season - got his opportunity when the SaberCats' regular offensive specialist, Calvin Schexnayder, went down with an injury. Here's betting San Jose won't be rushing Schexnayder back to the field any time soon.

Since Nelson wasn't included in Upper Deck's 2006 AFL set, we can scarcely think of a better collectible than a SaberCats mini helmet signed by Big Ben himself.
