Portland Beavers News Release
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Jon Knott hit his eighth and ninth home runs of the season and the Beavers scored four runs in the 10th inning to end their road trip on a winning note with a 12-8 victory over the Nashville Sounds Tuesday night.
The teams combined for 34 hits in the game, with Portland tallying a season-high 18 base knocks. Yamid Haad, who hit his third home run of the season, and Jose Nieves led the way with four hits apiece.
Portland (19-21) held an 8-7 advantage going into the bottom of the ninth, but the Sounds scratched out a run on two infield singles against stopper Bart Miadich to send the game to extra innings, where the Beavers had lost three straight.
The Beavers loaded the bases against reliever Juan Acevedo to start the 10th and went ahead for good on J.J. Furmaniak's single up the middle that wound up scoring two and added to that with Nieves' two-run double, his third two-bagger of the game.
Luke Allen went 4-for-5 with a pair of runs scored for the Sounds (20-18).
Matt Hampton (1-1) worked the bottom of the 10th for the Beavers, who open an eight-game homestand at PGE Park Thursday night. Despite his third blown save of the season, Miadich (2-2) picked up his second win of the season.
Knott's first home run of the game gave the Beavers a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but Nashville fought back with four runs (three of them unearned) in the bottom of the second for a two-run lead.
Knott, who drove in five and has 38 RBIs this season, restored the Beavers' lead with a three-run blast in the top of the third. Haad followed three batters later with a two-run shot to give Portland a 7-4 advantage.
The damage chased Nashville starter Nelson Figueroa after 2.1 innings of work.
Knott has hit safely in 20 of his last 23 games, hitting seven home runs and wracking up 29 RBIs in that span.
The Beavers are off on Wednesday before starting a four-game series with the Iowa Cubs at PGE Park on Thursday.
NOTES: Beavers right-hander Justin Germano was recalled by the San Diego Padres on Tuesday. Germano will not be replaced on the Portland roster for now, as Padres left-hander Sterling Hitchcock is set to join the team to begin a major league rehab assignment on Thursday ... the Beavers, winners of three of their last five, are 4-4 in extra innings ... Portland starter Joey Hamilton gave up 11 of Nashville's 16 hits in his 6.0 innings for his seventh no-decision in eight starts ... the Beavers used five pitchers and the Sounds six ... Portland tallied nine extra-base hits on six doubles and three homers ... Knott joined Xavier Nady, who has hits in 12 of his last 13 games, as the only Portland batters with two home runs in a game this season. Both multi-homer games came on the road trip, where the Beavers were 3-5 ... Alex Fernandez has a six-game hit streak and Nieves has a five-gamer coming into the homestand ... the Beavers had three double plays in the game ... sixteen of Portland's next 20 games are at PGE Park.
