Portland Beavers News Release

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Beavers announced today that the team will donate a portion of the proceeds from individual tickets sold for the Aug. 3 "Bark in the Park" promotion at PGE Park to assist with medical expenses incurred by dog owners affected by the unfortunate series of recent canine poisonings at Laurelhurst Park in Southeast Portland.

"Bark in the Park" is one of the team's most popular promotions each year. On Sunday, Aug. 3, fans are invited to enjoy the Sunday afternoon game at PGE Park with their "best friends." Dogs are admitted free to the game and the first 500 canines through the gates receive a complimentary Frisbee, courtesy of 24-Hour Fitness.

Tickets for the game range from $6.00 - $10.00.

Beginning today, the Beavers will donate $1 for each ticket sold to the Aug. 3 game to the Charlie Fund, a program that provides monetary assistance to help with on-going medical care for abused animals. Devon Jahn, public relations director for Dove Lewis Emergency Animal Hospital in Portland, estimates that medical bills incurred as a result of the recent animal poisonings have soared to more than $30,000. Money raised through tickets sold to "Bark in the Park" will help defray the costs for the owners of those pets.

"The on-going support from the Portland community during this stressful time has been wonderful," Jahn said. "We've already raised about $6,000 to help with these costs, but much more is needed."

The recent poisonings at Laurelhurst Park, a popular area for dog enthusiasts, is thought to have taken place between July 3 and July 9. A criminal investigation continues and the reward for information leading to an arrest in the matter has been estimated at $15,000.

So far, according to Jahn, at least 12 dogs have died as a result of the poisonings.
