Portland Beavers News Release
RIVER CATS WELL-ROUNDED IN 9-2 WIN OVER PORTLAND Sacramento wins fifth in a row over Beavers with team effort
For immediate release: June 6, 2008 WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Chris Gissell led a group of four pitchers that held Portland to four hits, and the Sacramento River Cats plated seven runs over a two-inning span in the middle innings on their way to a 9-2 victory and their fifth straight triumph over the Beavers Friday night at Raley Field.
Jeff Baisley tallied three hits and scored twice; Brooks Conrad doubled, drew two walks and scored three runs; and Casey Rogowski clubbed his ninth home run for the River Cats (39-22), who have won seven of their last nine and 12 of their last 16. Six different Sacramento players drove in a run and all but one batter in the lineup had at least one hit.
Gissell, who was limited to four innings due to a predetermined pitch count, struck out six and allowed just one base runner (walk) in his time on the hill, while Lenny DiNardo (4-1) gave up a run on two hits over three relief innings for the win. Former Beaver Andrew Brown, with the River Cats on a major league rehab assignment, was charged with one run in his 1 1/3 innings, and Ryan Wing recorded the final two outs.
After a string of solid outings, Enrique Gonzalez (3-3) suffered his first loss since May 11 by giving up six runs, seven hits and three walks in 4 1/3 innings, snapping his three-game winning streak.
The Beavers (29-30) have lost four in a row and seven of their last nine to fall below .500 for the first time in two weeks.
Rogowski belted a solo homer, Conrad hit an RBI double and Richie Robnett lined a two-out RBI single into center to give the River Cats a 3-0 lead in the fourth.
It was more of the same in the fifth as Sacramento rallied for four more runs against Gonzalez, who struck out six, and Sean Henn, who was making his debut with the Beavers. Baisley's double led to two runs and he later scored from third on a wild pitch by Henn. Danny Putnam added an RBI single as the lead extended to 7-1.
Landon Powell's RBI single allowed Conrad to score in the seventh, and the River Cats added an unearned run in the eighth.
The Beavers picked up a run in the fifth when Will Venable reached on a one-out double, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Nick Hundley's groundout. Chase Headley logged an RBI double in the ninth.
The series continues Saturday night at 7:05 p.m.
NOTES: Portland infielder Craig Stansberry was recalled by San Diego earlier in the day. The Padres also reinstated pitcher Clay Hensley from the disabled list and optioned him to Portland ... three of Portland's four hits were doubles.
