Portland Beavers News Release
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Jon Knott doubled twice and had a three-run triple as the Portland Beavers won the second game of a doubleheader with an 8-4 victory over the Nashville Sounds Sunday afternoon.
Nashville won the first game, 7-6 in 10 innings.
Xavier Nady was 5-for-8 with two doubles, two runs scored and two RBIs in the doubleheader, the Beavers' first of the season.
Nashville (19-17) got out to a 2-0 lead in the nightcap on a two-run double by Keith McDonald in the bottom of the second.
Nady tied the game in the fourth with a two-run double down the left field line and Alex Fernandez gave the Beavers (18-20) a 3-2 lead on a two-out double that scored Nady.
Tony Alvarez' solo home run off Portland starter Justin Germano tied things at 3-3 in the fifth, but the Beavers took the lead for good in the top of the sixth when Knott, who had four RBIs in the game, doubled home Bobby Scales and Fernandez plated Jose Nieves with a single to center.
The Sounds got to within 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth when reliever Bart Miadich, who earned his ninth save, walked in a run.
Knott's bases-loaded triple completed the scoring in the seventh.
Germano (1-1) worked 5.1 innings, allowing four runs on eight hits for his first Triple-A win in three tries.
In the first game of the twinbill, the Beavers rallied to tie the game after digging a 6-1 hole, but Nashville's Rich Thompson scored the winning run in the bottom of the 10th when Chris Truby delivered a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to right field the throw home by Ben Petrick was not in time.
With the Beavers down by five, J.J. Furmaniak hit a two-run shot off Nashville starter Dave Williams in the fifth, and with the bases loaded in the sixth inning, Nashville closer Mark Corey walked in a run and gave up two others when Fernandez singled to score two and tie the game at 6-6. Sounds reliever Willis Roberts, who had left the bases loaded, was hit with all the runs in the frame. The blown save was Corey's third of the year.
Luke Allen hit a solo home run that just cleared the right field wall in the bottom of the first to open up the scoring and give the Sounds an early 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, J.R. House -- who finished the contest with four RBIs -- gave the Sounds a 3-0 lead when he hit a two-run double to score Randall Simon and Ruben Mateo.
In the bottom of the third, the Sounds padded their lead at 6-1 when House clubbed a two-run homer against Portland starter Brian Sweeney for his seventh long ball of the year.
Sounds' reliever Justin Reid (2-0) picked up his second win of the year after tossing a scoreless inning, while Portland reliever Matt Hampton (0-1) dropped his first of the season.
The series continues Monday at 5 p.m. (Pacific). Right-hander Matt Bruback gets the start against his former team in a match up of two 0-5 pitchers. John VanBenschoten, the Pittsburgh Pirates' No. 1 prospect, goes for the Sounds.
NOTES: The Beavers added Portland-native Joe Gerber to the roster before Sunday's games. Gerber, who was sent back to Class AA Mobile on Tuesday, joined the Beavers for a second time as the result of the trade of outfielder Henri Stanley to Boston on Saturday ... with the loss in the first game, the Beavers have now dropped their last four extra-inning games and are 3-4 on the season ... the teams combined to use 15 different pitchers in the doubleheader ... Sweeney, who had won his previous five starts, gave up a season-high six runs on eight hits in 4.0 innings in taking a no-decision in the first game ... both teams had 21 hits on the day ... the win in the nightcap was the Beavers' first against a left-hander starter this season. Portland is 1-5 against southpaws.
