Edmonton Trappers News Release

Catcher Randy Knorr blooped a single into left-center field with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning, scoring Julius Matos from second base to give the Edmonton Trappers a 2-1 victory over the Albuquerque Isotopes Sunday afternoon at TELUS Field. Last at-bat victories have become commonplace for the Trappers, who are now 15-6 at home, including a 9-4 mark at TELUS Field. Edmonton has won each of the first two games in this series in their final at-bat and have three walk-off victories on this homestand. The Trappers rallied from a 1-0 deficit for the win, the fourth time in six games on this homestand that they've come-from-behind to win a game. Overall Edmonton has five last at-bat wins and has come-from-behind for the victory 11 times. Amazingly the Trappers are now 11-0 in home games decided by two runs or less and in addition the club is 3-0 in extra-innings. Edmonton and Albuquerque continue this four-game series on Monday night at TELUS Field.

Albuquerque right-hander Michael Nannini and Edmonton left-hander Scott Downs were locked up in a pitchers duel for most of the afternoon. Downs, who began the day with a 4-1 record and a 3.35 ERA, got into trouble in the first inning, allowing back-to-back singles to leadoff man Wilson Valdez and number-two hitter Kevin Hooper. He struck out the next two batters, but then walked Brian Banks to load the bases for Chris Aguila. Downs got out of the jam by fanning Aguila. The Isotopes managed just one hit, an infield single by third baseman Drew Niles in the second inning, over the next four frames. Nannini, who began the day with a lofty 7.75 ERA, was perfect through the first three innings, retiring all nine Trapper batters. Second baseman Brian Harris extended his hitting streak to six games with a double to leadoff the fourth inning, but Nannini promptly set down the next three batters to get out of the inning unscathed. Matos led off the sixth inning with a single, but was caught stealing. Nannini was close to perfect over the first six innings, facing just one batter over the minimum.

Jason Wood, the 1997 Trapper of the Year, gave the Isotopes the lead with a solo home run off Downs in the sixth inning. It was the first homer of the year for Wood, who has 137 in his minor league career, including 39 with the Trappers. Downs retired six of the final seven batters that he faced and in total went 8.0 innings, allowing one run on five hits and one walk, while fanning five. Edmonton tied the game in the seventh inning when shortstop Anthony Medrano led off with a double and scored on a single to center field by third baseman Scott Hodges. Nannini exited after seven innings, allowing just one run on five hits. He walked none and fanned three. With one out in the bottom of the 10th inning Matos doubled to the gap in left-center field off another former Trapper, lefty Juan Alvarez (1-1), and then scored on Knorr's base hit. Closer Pat Mahomes (3-0) pitched 1.0 shutout inning for the victory.
