
Bears Strand 12 in 9-5 Loss to Ducks

NEWARK, N.J., June 9-The Newark Bears had 13 hits, but stranded 12 runners, Monday night at Riverfront Stadium as the Bears lost to the Long Island Ducks, 9-5. The loss broke Newark's three-game winning streak.
The Ducks had a 3-1 lead after six innings and broke open the game by scoring two runs in each of the 7th, 8th and 9th innings off of the Bears bullpen. Second baseman Rusty McNamara paced the Ducks offense, going 3-4 with a triple, a walk and one RBI. Right fielder Jason Johnson went 2-4 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI.
The Bears rallied for four runs in the bottom half of the ninth inning off of Long Island closer Oscar Henriquez, but could not come all of the way back. Rickey Henderson hit a two-run home run in the 9th, his 5th home run of the season. Henderson was 3-5 with the home run and a double on the night.
Danny Clyburn hit his league-leading 11th home run for Newark, a solo blast in the 4th inning. Pete Maestrales, Fransisco Lebron and Jack Santora all had a pair of hits for the Bears.
Tom Stepka (2-3) started and took the loss for the Bears, allowing 3 runs on 6 hits over 5 innings of work. Stepka tied his season high by striking out six batters.
Bryan Rekar (3-1) earned the win for Long Island, allowing just one run on six hits in 5 innings. Joe Cotton recorded the final two outs in the ninth inning for his first save of the season.
