YAKIMA, Wash. - The Yakima Bears (23-42) erased an early three-run deficit but allowed a run in the ninth to fall to the Tri-City Dust Devils (39-26) 4-3 in the series opener in front of 1,752 fans at County Stadium Wednesday night.
Bears' starter Dan Taylor allowing three runs - two earned - on four Devils hits in the top of the fourth inning to open the game's scoring. Taylor ended up tossing five innings, allowing the two earned on five hits, while striking out eight and walking three. It was the first time Taylor allowed multiple runs since his debut start July 25.
Yakima tied up the game in the bottom of the sixth with a Tim Sherlock two-run double and an ensuing wild pitch.
The bullpens then matcher zeroes until the top of the ninth inning when Tim Wheeler roped a two-out double off Bears' reliever Brian Budrow, followed by a Jeremiah Sammy go-ahead RBI single up the middle.
Charlie Ruiz struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth to earn his 16th save of the season. Craig Bennigson (8-3) pitched two scoreless out of the bullpen to pick up the victory.
Ryan Wheeler compiled his second straight three-hit night, finishing 3-for-3 with his 20th double of the season. Gerson Montilla also had three hits in the loss.
Yakima has now dropped five straight and six of seven on the year against Tri-City.
The two clubs will be at it again 7:05 Thursday night for game two of the three-game series. Houston Summers (2-0, 6.37 ERA) gets the nod for the Bears against Sheng-An Kuo (3-3, 6.00 ERA) for the Devils.
