Bears Beat the Canadians Again, Take 2-0 Series Lead

August 12, 2011 - Northwest League (NWL) - Yakima Bears News Release

The Yakima Bears won 3-1 over the Vancouver Canadians at Yakima County Stadium Thursday night. The Bears gained a game on the division leading Tri-City Dust Devils and now sit five games off the pace in the second half at 6-10.

The Bears pitchers were two outs away from a shutout, but a run was allowed in the ninth before the game was won.

Bears starting pitcher Adam Kudryk spread out seven hits and three walks during five shutout innings. The lefty recorded seven strikeouts and earned his second win of the season.

While Kudryk was on the mound, the Bears scored all of their runs in the second and third innings.

Garrett Weber led off the second with a double and advanced to third on a groundout. After Justin Hilt reached on a walk, he was caught in a run down between second and third on a pickoff attempt by the Canadians. Hilt would be tagged out, but the rundown allowed Weber to come home from third and score the first run of the game.

In the third inning, Steve Rodriguez led off with a single and Kerry Jenkins hit a double to put two runners in scoring position. Rodriguez scored on a groundout by Westley Moss and Jenkins was plated when Danny Pulfer hit a single.

The Bears were outhit 9-6 in the game and the Canadians pitching staff retired 15 consecutive Bears batters to finish the game.

Both Weber and Jenkins connected on doubles and six different players had one hit apiece. With only one walk and limited hits it wasn't a banner night for the offense, but Canadians pitchers were only able to get two strikeouts on the night.

After two shutout innings from Bears pitcher Victor Acosta in his Northwest League debut, Miles Reagan allowed a run in one and two thirds innings. Reagan left two runners on base, but both were stranded when Sammy De Los Santos retired the only batter he faced for his second save of the season.

The Bears will try for the series win in game three of the five-game set Friday night. Game time at Yakima County Stadium is scheduled for 7:05. Right-handed pitchers Alex Capaul of the Bears and Taylor Cole of the Canadians are expected to start the game.
