
Bears Beat Patriots 13-7 To Win Championship

Newark, NJ- The Newark Bears put up eight runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat the Somerset Patriots 13-7 to win the 2007 Atlantic League Championship.
Right fielder Jose Herrera, the Championship Series MVP, went 3 for 4 with four runs scored, three home runs, and six RBI in the game.
Trailing 7-5, Herrera lead off the eighth inning with a walk. Center fielder Keith Reed singled and Herrera scored on an RBI single by first baseman Victor Rodriguez. Third baseman Corey Smith followed with an RBI single to tie up the game at 7-7. Designated hitter Joey Gomes' two-run double gave the Bears the lead. Catcher Pachot then reached on a fielder's choice and shortstop Ramon Castro singled. Herrera then hit a three-run home run, his third of the game, to give Newark a 13-7 victory.
The Patriots took an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Right fielder Elliott Ayala singled, center fielder Mike Lockwood walked, and second baseman Teuris Olivares singled to load the bases. Third baseman Brandon Larson then drove in two with a single and designated hitter Josh Pressley added one on an RBI single.
Newark got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Castro singled and scored on Herrera's two-run homer to make the score 3-2.
Herrera hit his second home run of the game in the bottom of the third inning to tie the game 3-3.
Somerset regained the lead in the top of the sixth inning. Pressley singled and catcher Travis Anderson drew a walk. Ayala followed with a two-run double to score Pressley and Anderson. After Lockwood was intentionally walked, Olivares hit a two-run double to put Somerset up 7-3.
Newark answered with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Smith singled and scored on an RBI triple by left fielder Ruben Mateo. Gomes followed with an RBI single to make the score 7-5.
Newark reliever Shaun Babula (1-0) picked up the win. Patriots reliever Saul Solveson (0-1) suffered the loss.
The Championship was Newark's second in league history, having won the title in 2002.
