Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
NORMAL, IL - Traverse City Beach Bums(2-1) went into the eighth trailing by two but pulled ahead with three in the inning and held on to beat the Normal Cornbelters(1-2), by a final score of 5-4. With tonight's win, the Beach Bums have won their opening series for the first time since the 2015 championship season.
Unlike the previous two games of the series, it took a few innings for runs to be put on the board. It started in the fourth when, with one out, Luke Lowery walked and stole second. Two batters later, Kenny Peoples-Walls hit a two-run blast, giving the Beach Bums the lead. Normal didn't wait too long to respond as they took the lead in the fifth. It was a bases-loaded walk issued to Chris Iriart, an RBI groud-out by Andrew Godbold, and an RBI single by Tanner Lubach that gave the Cornbelters a 3-2 advantage.
Derek Loveless added an RBI single in the seventh for an insurance run but Traverse City wasn't done. Orlando Rivera led off the eighth by getting a hard-earned walk. Will Kengor followed and rocketed a deep fly ball off of the top of the right field wall for a double to score Orlando. Lowery tied the game up right after with a single up the middle to plate Kengor, then Lowery took second on the errant throw home. After Alexis Rivera moved Lowery to third with a grounder, Peoples-Walls drove him home with a single to center, giving the Beach Bums the lead for good.
The Frontier League's first pick in this year's draft, John Michael Knighton, came in to pitch in the seventh and hurled two solid innings of relief for the win. He allowed two hits and a walk while fanning one. Jose Savinon gave up all three runs in the eighth, on three hits and a walk, in a losing effort. For the second straight night, Matt Williams pitched a perfect ninth for the save.
After the off-day tomorrow, the Beach Bums will trek to suburban St. Louis to take on the River City Rascals in a three game series. Scott Grist starts for River City while RHP Adam Cornwell will go for the Beach Bums. First pitch is scheduled for 7:35pm(EDT) and Tom Willms will start the broadcast at 7:15 with the Budweiser pregame show. You can hear the game at TCBeachBums.com.
Opening night is Wednesday, May 23rd, and you'll get double the bang for your buck with a doubleheader against the Florence Freedom. Magnet schedules will be given out to the first 500 fans, so arrive early and don't miss out! The gates open at 4pm with first pitch for game one set to begin at 5:05pm.
