Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

WUERFEL PARK The Traverse City Beach Bums are off to a good start in the 2015 Frontier League Championship series. Behind another outstanding performance from starter Kramer Champlin, the Beach Bums breezed to a 6-0 win over the River City Rascals in the opener of the best-of-five series, Tuesday night.

Champlin allowed no runs, struck out seven and scattered six hits over seven innings of work. He has gone 22 innings without allowing a run to River City this year. He's also allowed just one run over 14 innings pitched in the postseason, going 2-0.

Yazy Arbelo and Brandon Jacobs each hit solo homers, and went 2-4 at the plate to pace the offense as the Beach Bums sent River City to a death of a thousand paper cuts. It wasn't a big inning that doomed River City, but instead the Beach Bums nipped away at pitcher Tim Koons all the night.

Koons, who went 11-0 in the regular season, allowed five runs on nine hits in just five innings of work.

Jose Vargas put the Beach Bums up 1-0 in the first with a sacrifice fly. In the second, Arbelo led off with a homer to left center, and Jeff DeBlieux added a sac fly to make the score 3-0.

Arbelo came through with a RBI single in the third and the score was 4-0. Jacobs launched his homer, off the scoreboard in left center, in the fifth and the score was 5-0.

In the seventh, Vargas scored on a wild pitch sealing the score 6-0. Alan Oaks and Chuck Ghysels each pitched a scoreless inning to finish the game for the Beach Bums.

The Beach Bums outhit the River City 9-7, with all but two players in the line-up registering at least one hit. .

Former Beach Bum Zach Kometani led River City with two hits. League MVP Taylor Ard was held hitless in four plate appearances.

Making their second appearance, and first since 2010, in the Championship Series the Beach Bums are only two wins away from their first title.
