Beach Bums Take 2-1 Series Lead with Win

TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Traverse City Beach Bums shut out the Lake Erie Crushers for the second time in the playoffs. But more importantly, the Beach Bums used a team effort to beat the Crushers 5-0 for a 2-1 lead in the Frontier League Divisional Series.
The Beach Bums took the advantage early as Carlo Testa hit a one-out single and stole second to put himself in scoring position. Jose Vargas doubled home Testa for a 1-0 Beach Bums lead. Traverse City doubled the lead in the second when the Beach Bums loaded the bases. Ryan Still hit a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Sean Gusrang making it 2-0 TC.
The Beach Bums grabbed another run in the fifth when Vargas led off with a double and scored one batter later on Chase Burch's single.
Vargas and Burch connected again in the seventh inning, when both players went deep over the left field wall. It was the first time the Beach Bums hit back-to-back homeruns since July 28 against the Florence Freedom, the duo to go yard was once again Vargas and Burch.
Mike Devine (1-0) never allowed a base runner past first base as he shutout the Crushers through six innings on four hits and six strikeouts. Alex Kaminsky (0-1) suffered the loss as he allowed three runs through five innings. Matt Miller's three scoreless innings to end the game gave him his first save of the postseason.
The Beach Bums have a chance to clinch the Frontier League Divisional Series with a win Wednesday against the Crushers. Traverse City will look to Jake Sabol (10-6, 3.19) on the mound. Lake Erie's starter is still to be determined. It will be another Two For One special at Wuerfel Park, where $10 chairback seats are buy one get one free. It is also going to be a Weenie Wednesday, with $1 hotdogs being sold at the park all night long. First pitch is at 7:05 pm. Gates open at 6:00 pm.
