Beach Bums Split Twin Bill at Lake Erie

August 21, 2016 - Frontier League (FL)
Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

Game one was a continuation of yesterday's suspended game in which Lake Erie led 3-2 after two. Will Kengor hit a two-run double in the first but Max Casper hit an RBI infield single, and Robb Paller hit a two-run single in the second to account for all of the scoring. Although the Beach Bums were walked nine times in the game, they could only muster one hit from the time the game restarted until the end.

Justin SInibaldi earned the win for Lake Erie to improve to 1-5. He came in to start the third and went three and a third innings of hitless ball, walking six, but striking out six. Benjamin Libuda did a gutsy job of returning from yesterday's suspended game to go five innings total. He allowed three runs on six hits and three walks, while striking out three. He falls to 3-4.

In game two, the Beach Bums offense regrouped quickly when Jose Vargas hit a solo blast over the right-center field wall for his thirteenth home run of the season. The inning continued with walks to Will Kengor and Steven Patterson, then Elijah Trail ripped a two-run double down the left field line to make it a 3-0 game after a half of an inning.

Marcos Derkes led off the second with a double, moved to third on a wild pitch, then Ryan Bottger drove him in with an RBI sacrifice fly to left. After a scoreless third, Bottger walked to start another two out rally. Jose Vargas then slammed an RBI triple to center, and scored himself on a wild pitch to make it 6-0. Lake Erie got their lone run when Bryan De La Rosa led off the fifth with a solo homer, his third of the year. The Beach Bums responded in the top of the seventh when Kengor doubled, moved to third on a Patterson fly, and scored on a Trail sacrifice fly.

Beach Bums starter, Michael Shreves was solid throughout, going all seven innings for the complete game. He allowed one run on six hits, three walks, and struck out five. He improves to 3-8 on the season. Josh Heddinger is dealt the loss to fall to 3-5, after he went 3 2/3 innings, allowing six runs on five hits and five walks, and he fanned five. With the doubleheader split, the Beach Bums take the weekend series, two games to one.

The Beach Bums return action, on Tuesday evening, from Consol Energy Park, in Pennsylvania, as they visit the Washington Wild Things, in a doubleheader and the first two games of a three game series. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 6:05pm and Tom Willms will have the call starting at 5:45pm with the Miller Lite pre-game show on 101.9- The Bay.
