TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Frontier League East Division leading Traverse City Beach Bums dropped a 6-5 decision to the Windy City ThunderBolts in the rain on Saturday night.
Windy City opened a lead in the second inning against David Nathanson and never trailed in holding off the Beach Bums following a rain delay of 1:06 in the eighth inning. Brett Amyx drove in a run with a single and Danny Sawyer followed with a two-run homer to open a 3-0 edge. The ThunderBolts added a run in the fourth on a Scott Billak double to take a 4-0 lead before the Beach Bums began to rally.
Dallas Sims made his first professional start for Windy City and walked Pat Perry leading off the bottom of the fifth. Brad Miller followed with a double, the first hit of the game. Matt Imwalle drove in a run with a groundout and Brad Roblin plated a run with an RBI single to pull the Beach Bums within 4-2.
Two more Windy City runs in the sixth ended the night for Nathanson, who took the loss after allowing a season high six runs in his six innings of work.
The Beach Bums got as close as 6-5 in the game and had several chances to tie the contest but couldn't break through against the ThunderBolts. Matt Imwalle came through with a bases loaded single to score Mike Epping and Pat Perry in the sixth and Kyle Maunus plated Mike Goetz with an RBI groundout in the seventh, but the Beach Bums left runners in scoring position in both innings.
Pat Perry led off the eighth with a double and the Beach Bums had runners at first and second with one out when the rain and lightning began to fall, halting the game. After the delay Windy City brought in closer Matt Petty who walked Mike Goetz to load the bases but then retired the next four batters to record just his second save of the season.
Pat Perry had two hits and two walks for the Beach Bums. Matt Imwalle drove in three runs to earn Beach Bums Player of the Game honors. He was 1-for-3 with a walk.
The Beach Bums conclude the homestand tomorrow night against the ThunderBolts with a 5:30 pm game. RHP J.T. King (2-2, 5.81) will pitch for Traverse City against RHP Adam Dominick, who will make his professional debut for the ThunderBolts.
