
Beach Bums Drop Weekend Series Opener to Gateway

TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Traverse City Beach Bums(22-26) had trouble stringing together hits tonight against the Gateway Grizzlies(22-29), falling by a final score of 5-2
After a scoreless first inning, both teams picked up single runs in the second. Matt Gonzalez gave Gateway a 1-0 lead on an RBI single that scored Brennan Morgan. With one out in the bottom of the inning, Noah McGowan walked and Connor Oliver singled. Kendall Patrick later tied the game with an RBI single.
Gateway retook the lead in the third on a Trae Santos RBI single, then made it 3-1 when Morgan scored on a double play. In the fifth, Blake Brown one-hopped a double over the left field wall, scoring two, increasing the Gateway lead to 5-1. Kendall Patrick led off the eighth inning with a single into left field. He moved to second on a wild pitch, to third on a ground out, then scored on an Alec Olund ground out, to pull the Bums within three.
Max MacNabb went eight strong innings for the win, allowing two runs on five hits and two walk while striking out three. His record improves to 5-5. Justin Finan drops to 0-3 with tonight's loss as he allowed five runs on nine hits and a walk in four and two-thirds innings. Kevin Simmons struck out the side in the ninth for his sixth save of the season.
On Saturday, the Beach Bums and Gateway Grizzlies play game two of this weekend's three game set. Mike Elwood gets the start for Gateway while Reinaldo Lopez goes for the Beach Bums.
