TRAVERSE CITY - The Traverse City Beach Bums have acquired American Association All-Star third basemen Matt Imwalle, cash, and a player to be named later from the Sioux Falls Canaries in exchange for shortstop Tim Hutting.

The switch-hitting Imwalle played in all 96 games for Sioux Falls in 2007, hitting .263 with 25 doubles, 2 triples, 15 home runs, and 49 RBI. Imwalle ranked 3rd in the American Association in home runs and 5th in extra-base hits while being named to the league's All-Star team.

"We are thrilled to add Imwalle's bat to our lineup," said the Beach Bums Director of Baseball Operations Jason Wuerfel. "He is a big, strong guy who scares opposing teams every time he comes to the plate. He was one of the best power hitters in the American Association last year, and we expect him to build off that success in Traverse City."

The 5'11" 215-pound Imwalle is a native of Scotts Valley, California, and played his college ball at Oklahoma City University. At OCU Imwalle was an All-American both his junior and senior season, hitting a combined 44 home runs during those two years. After college, Imwalle signed his first professional contract in 2006 with the Atlantic City Surf of the Atlantic League, a league mostly filled with players who have triple-A or Major League experience. Imwalle hit .264 in 110 at-bats for Atlantic City, including 7 doubles, 2 triples, a home run, and 7 RBI.

To complete their side of the deal, Traverse City will send newly acquired shortstop Tim Hutting to Sioux Falls. The Beach Bums received Hutting in a trade with the Joliet Jackhammers earlier this off-season.

Imwalle, who played all 96 games at 3rd base for Sioux Falls in 2007, is expected split time at DH, 1st base, and 3rd base in Traverse City.
