Chesapeake Baysox News Release
(Akron, OH) - The Baysox could not get going offensively against Akron starter Ryan Edell and were done in by a Major hit, dropping game three to the Aeros 6-2 Friday. Bowie starter David Hernandez allowed six runs in two innings, including a grand slam from Major League rehab assignment Travis Hafner, before being ejected from the contest.
David Hernandez got into trouble with the first Aeros batter of the game, when Josh Rodriguez hit a triple to center field. Brandon Sardinha followed with a base hit to left, scoring Rodriguez and giving Akron a 1-0 lead.
Hernandez got Matt Whitney to ground out to lead off the bottom of the second before the floodgates opened. Wyatt Toregas hit a one-out double and Brandon Chaves flied out for the second out of the inning. Josh Rodriguez drew a walk and Sardinha hit an infield single to third base, scoring Toregas. Matt LaPorta drew a walk to load the bases and Hafner crushed a grand slam to right-center field, making the score 6-0 Aeros.
Hernandez struck out Wes Hodges to end the second inning. The Baysox came up in the top of the third and Blake Davis struck out to lead off the inning. Hernandez had an issue with the strike zone and prompted first base umpire Mark Buchanan to eject him from the game. Hernandez left having allowed six runs on five hits through just 2.0 innings of work.
Rommie Lewis, Felix Romero, Wilfredo Perez and Gerardo Casadiego kept the Baysox in the game with 6.0 combined shutout innings of relief. Lewis allowed two hits through 3.0 innings of work and no other Bowie pitcher allowed a hit for the rest of the game.
The Baysox finally got on the board with two runs in the top of the eighth. Blake Davis hit a one-out double to center field and Carlos Rojas slapped an infield single to shortstop, putting runners on the corners. Nolan Reimold continued his hot streak, driving a double to the gap in left-center field that scored both runners and made the score 6-2 Aeros.
With the loss, the Baysox are down two games to one in the Southern Division series, one loss away from elimination from the playoffs. The Baysox look to extend the series Saturday as RHP Chris Tillman (11-4, 3.18 ERA) will go up against Aeros RHP Frank Herrmann (11-6, 4.10 ERA). Should the Baysox win game four Saturday, the teams will return to Bowie for a decisive game five Sunday, September 7 at 5:05 p.m.
The Bowie Baysox are out to Beat The Streaks in their 16th season as the "AA" affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. The Baysox have not reached the postseason since 1997 and have never reached the Eastern League Championship. Playoff tickets are available now on www.baysox.com or by calling the box office at (301) 464-4865.
