BayHawks Announce Flagship City Night
February 28, 2019 - NBA G League (G League)
Erie BayHawks News Release
ERIE, PA - The Erie BayHawks, NBA G League affiliate of the Atlanta Hawks Basketball Club, announced today that they will be renamed the "Flagship City BayHawks" for their home game on March 22 against the Windy City Bulls.
As part of Flagship City Night, Erie will wear exclusive uniforms. The U.S. Brig Niagara is visible on the front of the jersey, top right. Also on the front of the uniform is the quote "We have met the enemy and they are ours." The quote comes from Oliver Hazard Perry's report to General William Henry Harrison, following the Battle of Lake Erie. The back of the uniform includes "Don't give up the ship," which were the words on the battle flag aboard the U.S. Brig Niagara.
On each side of the shorts are nautical flags that spell out E-R-I-E. Just under the players' last name sits the United Way of Erie County's logo. The artwork for Erie's Flagship City uniform was provided by R. Frank Photography, M. Kleck Photography and Steve Push Designs.
"Our team is proud to play in this great city and we're looking forward to this opportunity to play as the Flagship City BayHawks," said Team President Matt Bresee. "This game is another chance for Erie fans to celebrate all that we love about our region, including the rich history of our city and lake."
The unique jersey that the BayHawks will wear on March 22 will serve in a similar fashion to what NBA teams have coined as a "city edition" uniform, as the design is distinct to the city of Erie.
Erie is known as the "Flagship City" due to its status as the home port of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry's flagship, the U.S. Brig Niagara. During the 1813 Battle of Lake Erie, only two full-sized ships were capable of battle, the Lawrence and U.S. Brig Niagara. After the British destroyed Lawrence, Perry, an American naval commander, transferred to the U.S. Brig Niagara, taking the ship's flag with him. Perry sailed the undamaged U.S. Brig Niagara past the British battle line, forcing them to surrender.
Game-worn uniforms will be auctioned off throughout the March 22 contest, with all proceeds benefitting the United Way of Erie County and their campaign to "crush poverty in Erie County."
