PEARL, Miss. - For the fourth time in their first 11 contests and for the second straight night, the BayBears entered extra innings, but this time, they ended up on the short end in a 2-1 loss to the Mississippi Braves at Trustmark Park.

Starting pitching was a premium again for the BayBears (6-5) as Wes Roemer tossed eight solid innings. His only blemish came in the sixth when Alex Romero busted a scoreless tie by knocking his first home run of the season.

Roemer was on the ropes in the bottom of the eighth but squirmed away with no trouble. Luis Bolivar started the frame with a single and took third on a two-bagger by Romero. After Willie Cabrera was walked intentionally, Donell Linares popped out to left and Eric Duncan grounded out to first, leaving the bags full.

Roemer's heroics kept the contest even at 1-1 after the BayBears knotted the score in the top of the eighth. Chris Rahl singled with one away and advanced to third on a base hit by Ollie Linton. Cabrera attempted to throw Rahl out at third from right field, but the ball bounded away from Linares which allowed Rahl to score.

That blew an opportunity for Mike Minor to earn his first professional victory after he worked seven scoreless innings. Minor coughed up just two hits while fanning nine and walking five. Brett Butts choked the lead away in the eighth but worked a scoreless ninth.

Brandon Beachy (1-0) entered the game for the Braves (6-5) in the 10th and put up two more zeroes, working around a Linton double and an error in the top of the 10th. Jeff Dietz (0-1) replaced Roemer and kept the Braves off the board in the ninth and 10th before hitting the first man he faced in the 11th.

Duncan then singled to put Linares at third. After an intentional walk to Mauro Gomez, pinch-hitter Randy Gress singled over Collin Cowgill's head in right to end the night.

The BayBears continue their five-game set on the road in Mississippi on Tuesday night at 7:05. They return home to battle the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx on Saturday, April 24 at 7:05 p.m. For tickets, which start at $5 for kids and $7 for adults, please call (251) 479-BEAR or visit www.mobilebaybears.com.
