BayBears Best Barons In 17 At "The Hank"

MOBILE, Ala. - Just two innings shy of the longest game in BayBears history, the BayBears squeak home a run in the bottom of the 17th to defeat the Birmingham Barons, 5-4 on Sunday night at Hank Aaron Stadium.
Taylor Harbin kicked off the final frame with a double down the first base line against Ricky Brooks (0-1) and advanced to third on a sac bunt by Jake Elmore (1-0). Jake Wald bounced a slow chopper towards third which Justin Fuller couldn't handle, allowing Harbin to score, breaking a treacherous 4-4 tie.
The contest had been even since the eighth inning when Leyson Septimo uncorked a wild pitch to bring home Jim Gallagher. Gallagher tied a Southern League record in the process with six hits on the evening. Septimo's wild pitch spoiled what could have been a victory for Barry Enright, who allowed three runs in six innings.
Birmingham (2-8) certainly had opportunities to end the contest much earlier, but they left 17 men on base including 10 in extra innings alone. The Barons had a man on third base in five consecutive frames at one point but couldn't punch him in.
Eight pitchers were used by the BayBears (6-4) in the ballgame including two position players, Chris Rahl and Elmore. Rahl tossed two perfect innings while striking out Gallagher to end the 15th. Rahl, in his return to the BayBears, also belted an RBI double to tie the game at 1-1 in the first inning and scored on a single by Bryan Byrne.
The BayBears went up 4-1 in the fifth on Evan Frey's triple to bring home Ollie Linton. Frey scored on a sac fly by Byrne. Birmingham pushed home a pair in the sixth with a two-run single from Tyler Kuhn.
There was one other Southern League record tied in the game as the two teams combined for seven sacrifice bunts, tying a mark set in 2001 by Carolina and Greenville. There were 116 official at-bats in the contest, 30 hits and 26 strikeouts.
The BayBears open a five-game set on the road against the Mississippi Braves on Monday night at 7:05.
