Mobile, Ala. â The Southern League announced Friday that Mobile BayBears' third baseman Rico Washington was named the BC Powder Hitter of the Week. Washington hit .455 (10-for-22), drove in eight runs and scored seven times. Washington had six extra-base hits including three doubles and three home runs. For the week, the 24-year-old had a 1.000 slugging percentage and a .455 on-base percentage. The San Diego Padres picked up Washington in the 2002 Rule 5 draft after he was originally selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 10th round of the June 1997 draft.
Washington currently ranks sixth in the Southern League in batting average (.344) and sixth in slugging percentage (.573). The Gray, Georgia native is hitting .417 in his last 17 games and has hit in six straight games.
The BayBears conclude their four-game series with the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx Friday night at 7:05. They will begin a four-game set with Eastern Division leading Carolina beginning Saturday night. The first 1,000 kids 12-and-under through the gates at Hank Aaron Stadium will receive a free baseball glove compliments of the BayBears, Cellular South, WABB, and NBC-15.
