ZEBULON, N.C. - In a doubleheader pitting the team with the most wins in the Southern League against the squad with the fewest, it's the Carolina Mudcats who surprisingly sweep the BayBears in a Wednesday night doubleheader at Five County Stadium by scores of 4-2 and 2-1.

In the opening contest, Carolina (11-16) jumped out to the early advantage in the bottom of the second against Matt Torra (1-2) with the first three hitters reaching on two singles and an error. Eric Eymann drew a free pass with the bags full for the first tally, the only walk issued in the ballgame by Torra.

Two batters later, Chris Heisey drove a double down the left field line to bring home two more Mudcats. Gerardo Parra pulled the BayBears (17-10) within one as he lined a two-run homer down the right field line in the fourth against Matt Klinker (1-0) who was solid in his Carolina debut.

Juan Francisco, however, put a crater in the BayBears' comeback plans with a majestic home run in the fifth to give the Mudcats a 4-2 lead.

In the nightcap, Cody Evans (2-3) was strong in his five innings but surrendered two unearned runs in the fourth inning on a two-run double by Michael Griffin. In the seventh, the BayBears challenged as they shooed Travis Wood (1-3) from the ballgame after he walked lead-off batter Orlando Mercado.

Yunesky Sanchez doubled to left-center, putting the tying run in scoring position with no outs against Ramon Geronimo (S, 2). Pete Clifford made up for his fourth inning error by knocking home Mercado with a ground out, but Sanchez couldn't get off third as James Skelton and Chris Rahl made the night's final two outs.

Game three between the BayBears and Mudcats is on Thursday night as top prospect Jarrod Parker (0-1, 4.15) gets the nod at 6:15 p.m. central time. The BayBears return home to battle Montgomery on Monday, May 11 at 7:05 p.m. For Hank Aaron Stadium ticket information, please call (251) 479-BEAR or log on to www.mobilebaybears.com.
