Montgomery Biscuits News Release
MONTGOMERY, AL - The Birmingham Barons (17-8) turned the tables on the Biscuits and cruised to a 13-4 victory to even the series at a game apiece in front of 5,987 on Wednesday afternoon at Riverwalk Stadium. The loss snapped the Biscuits season-long four-game win-streak.
The Barons wasted little time getting after Montgomery starter Aneury Rodriguez as John Shelby led off the game with a double and scored when Gordon Beckham singled to make it 1-0. Beckham scored later in the inning as a pair of defensive miscues for Montgomery led to the second run.
Montgomery battled back to tie the game with a run in the third and another in the fourth. Barons' starter John Ely walked Matt Spring to lead off the third and he advanced to third on a Drew Anderson double. Desmond Jennings followed with an RBI groundout to put the Biscuits on the board. They tied the game in the fourth when Rashad Eldridge led off with a single. On an attempted pick-off at first base, Ely threw wide advancing Eldridge all the way to third base. Fernando Cortez brought him in with an RBI single to knot the game, 2-2.
Birmingham took control from there, plating six runs to blow the game open in the sixth inning. Rodriguez settled in through the fifth, but then walked Tyler Flowers and Brandon Allen to start the sixth. Dayan Viciendo then stepped in and launched a three-run home run to left-center field to give Birmingham a 5-2 lead. Mike Wlodarczyk relieved Rodriguez, but walked the first three batters he encountered to load the bases, still with nobody out. All three would score as Birmingham led 8-2 at the conclusion of the inning.
Rodriguez (0-5) was charged with five runs - four earned - and was tagged with his fifth loss of the season. He walked four while conceding four hits and striking out four.
Ely (4-0) worked through the sixth and won for the fourth time this season. He allowed just one earned run on eight hits while striking out five.
Wlodarczyk allowed another four runs in the seventh inning as the Barons pushed the lead to 10 runs, 12-2. C.J. Retherford supplied a two-run double in the inning and Beckham added his second RBI single of the game.
Newcomer Jason Perry doubled home two runs off of reliever Clevelan Santeliz in the eighth inning for Montgomery and Birmingham capped their scoring with a run off of Calvin Medlock in the ninth.
Game three of the series is scheduled for 7:05 PM on Thursday night at Riverwalk Stadium. RHP Heath Rollins (2-1, 2.83) will make the start for Montgomery against RHP Brian Omogrosso (2-0, 2.33) for Birmingham.
