May 13, 2003 - Southern League (SL1)
Mobile BayBears News Release
Mobile, Ala. â The Mobile BayBears dropped their third straight to the Mudcats as they battled back form a 5-1 deficit, but came up short, falling 6-4, in front of a vocal Hank Aaron Stadium crowd of 2,198. Mobile fell behind early, again as Carolina scored two runs in the second inning, and another in the fourth to go ahead 3-0.
The BayBears scored a single run in the bottom of the fourth, as Jon Knott hit a solo homerun, his second straight game with a homer. Knott's blast was his team-leading seventh of the season, which is good for second in the Southern League.
However, the Mudcats answered with two more of their own in the top of the fifth, taking the 5-1 lead off of Starter Brad Baker. The right-hander took the loss throwing five innings allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits, while striking out five.
Mobile plated another run in the sixth on a bases-loaded wild pitch by Mudcats' starter Randy Messenger. After Carolina plated an insurance run in the top of the eighth on an RBI double by Chris Aguila, the BayBears scored two runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame. Jake Gautreau drove home Rico Washington from third with an infield groundout and Vince Faison smashed an RBI single through the box and into center field, scoring Rich Gomez.
Faison entered the game in the top of the fifth inning, replacing Khalil Greene who was ejected from the game by home plate umpire Rob Hansen fro arguing a third strike, check-swing. Shortly thereafter, BayBears manager, Craig Colbert followed Greene into the clubhouse as Hansen threw him from the game as well.
The BayBears and Mudcats wrap up their series Tuesday night at 7:05. LHP Cory Stewart (3-2; 3.41) will start for Mobile against Carolina RHP Donnie Bridges (2-0; 5.63).
