
BayBears Fall for Third Straight Night to Barons

HOOVER, Ala. - A rough outing from Hector Ambriz turned into a 6-2 victory for the Birmingham Barons over the BayBears on Wednesday night at Regions Park, sending the BayBears to their fifth straight road defeat.
Ambriz (5-10) allowed six runs on 10 hits over 5.2 innings. Birmingham (49-36, 9-6) got to him in the second with Stefan Gartrell singling to start the frame and moving to third on a double by Ricardo Nanita. Gartrell came in on a groundout from Robbie Hudson to put the Barons on the board.
With two away in the bottom of the third, the Barons did more damage as Victor Mercedes doubled and ended up scoring on two wild pitches. Gartrell followed with an RBI double while Nanita's run-scoring single made it 4-0 Birmingham.
Carlos Torres (9-4) didn't need much more to beat the BayBears (35-50, 6-9) as he allowed a run in six frames. Frank Curreri and Gerardo Parra were responsible for the BayBear tallies with sac flies in the sixth and seventh innings. Hudson and Eric Hollis picked up RBI singles in the bottom of the sixth to finish the scoring for Birmingham as they send Kyle McCulloch (5-7, 4.36) to the mound on Thursday night against Cesar Valdez (0-0, 0.00), who will make his second start for the Bears.
The Fourth of July celebration is on at Hank Aaron Stadium as the BayBears are offering three nights of fireworks this week. On Thursday night, the Mayor's Cup between the Mobile Police and Fire Departments will be decided in a contest of softball bragging rights. The following two nights will feature the BayBears playing the Jacksonville Suns on Friday and Saturday with each game commencing at 7:05. BEAR CLAWS - Before the ballgame, Reid Mahon was promoted to Triple-A. Mahon was 18-for-18 in save chances for the BayBears this season. - With the loss, the BayBears fell to 15-29 in road contests. - Cesar Nicolas left the game yesterday in the sixth inning after fouling a ball off his left leg. He didn't play on Wednesday.
