Mobile BayBears News Release

Sevierville, Ten. – The Mobile Baybears are still yet to get in the win column in 2003 as they fell to 0-3 on the season, losing to the Tennessee Smokies, 5-3 Saturday night.

Mobile got on the board first, in the first, as Bobby Scales scored on a Tennessee error and Khalil Greene crossed the plate on an Alex Fernandez single up the middle.

BayBears starter, Cory Stewart, was impressive in his Double-A debut striking out 10 in just four innings of work. However, in the third inning with the BayBears leading 2-0, Stewart allowed three Smokies runs on five singles. The Smokies added another run in the fourth as their starting pitcher, Dan Haren, sliced a solo homerun down the right field line.

Mobile trimmed the lead to one run in the top of the fifth as Alex Fernandez picked up his second RBI of the game, doubling home Bobby Scales.

The Smokies added an insurance run in the eighth inning on a solo homerun by Caonabo Cosme off of BayBears reliever Chris Oxspring.

The BayBears and Smokies will conclude their series Sunday afternoon. Mobile will send RHP Chris Rojas to the mound against Tennessee RHP Jeremy Cummings. Game time from Sevierville is 4:00.
