MOBILE, Ala. - With Jarrod Parker out of the ballgame after getting popped by a line drive on his right wrist in the first inning, the BayBears had their backs against the wall early on Saturday night, but they nearly pulled it out in a 6-5 loss to the Tennessee Smokies at Hank Aaron Stadium.

Josh Ellis relieved Parker who only lasted a third of an inning before the line drive off the bat of James Adduci carried him from the contest. Two batters later, Blake Lalli hit a bouncer to first with Sean Coughlin throwing low to second and into left field, allowing Adduci to score the game's first run.

Tennessee (28-35) added two more in the first as Ty Wright doubled in Marquez Smith while a sac fly from Tyler Colvin put the Smokies up by three. Hung-Wen Chen cruised into the fourth before the BayBears (34-29) touched him up for three game-tying runs.

Chris Rahl, Coughlin and Yunesky Sanchez all reached with no outs as Pete Clifford put the BayBears on the board with a sac fly to score Rahl. Coughlin and Sanchez came home on a two-run double down the first base line from Mark Hallberg.

The BayBears quickly jumped on top in the fifth as Evan Frey walked with one and moved to second a single by Rahl. Chen was chased from the game with Jeremy Papelbon (1-3) entering and coughing up consecutive singles to Coughlin and Sanchez, putting the BayBears up by two.

While having to shoulder the load, the BayBears' bullpen reached empty in the seventh after Ellis, Ramon Sanchez and Daniel Schlereth all tossed multiple innings. With the game on the line, catcher Orlando Mercado was given the task of getting through two innings. He pitched a perfect seventh before surrendering the lead in the eighth. Adduci tied with a two-run double and scored on a base knock by Lalli.

X-rays were negative on Parker's wrist while Schlereth was on the hill for the first time since returning from the big leagues. He fanned a season-high four in 1 2/3 innings.

The BayBears battle the Smokies in game four of their series on Sunday with Cody Evans (3-6, 4.43) getting the start at 6:05 p.m. For Hank Aaron Stadium tickets, call (251) 479-BEAR or log on to www.mobilebaybears.com.
