Mobile BayBears News Release
MOBILE, AL -- The Mobile BayBears (40-25) opened their final homestand of the first half with a 5-3 victory over the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (29-37) Wednesday night at Hank Aaron Stadium. Mobile's win over their cross-the-bay rival and a loss by the Mississippi Braves Wednesday trimmed the BayBears magic number to two. There are four games left in the first half schedule but with a BayBears win and a loss by the Mississippi Braves Thursday night, Mobile would clinch the Southern League South Division First Half Title and earn their fifth consecutive trip to the Southern League Playoffs in September.
Mobile took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Sean Jamieson and Tom Belza reach on back-to-back singles. In the next at bat, both runners scored on a two-run double from Jake Lamb.
Pensacola tied the game and took a 3-2 lead in the top of the second inning. Former BayBears' catcher, Rossmel Perez led-off the frame with a solo homer to right. Travis Mattair then doubled and Juan Duran singled to put runners at first and third with no outs. Mattair scored on a Devin Lohman scored on a sacrifice to left and the Blue Wahoos took a 3-2 lead when Josh Fellhauer's RBI single drove in Duran.
Mobile reclaimed the lead in fourth when Tom Belza drew a two-out, bases loaded walk to tie the game at three and Lamb drove in two more runs with a two-run single that gave the BayBears a 5-3 lead.
RHP Justin Fitzgerald (6-0) earned the win, his fifth victory in six stars for Mobile. Fitzgerald finished with 6.1 innings of work, allowing three earned runs on nine hits, walking one and striking out four. RHP Jake Barrett came on in relief with two outs in the eighth inning and record the final four outs of the game, earning his 11th save of the season and securing the BayBears win.
The BayBears continue their final home series before the All-Star Break when the Pensacola Blue Wahoos return for first pitch Thursday, June 12, at 7:05 PM CT from Hank Aaron Stadium.
