Bay FC Falls 2-1 to Chicago Red Stars at PayPal Park

San Jose, Calif. - Bay FC grabbed an early 1-0 lead less than 10 minutes into the match, but surrendered a goal in each half, falling 2-1 to the Chicago Red Stars at PayPal Park on Sunday evening. Tess Boade tallied the lone goal for Bay FC, registering her second goal of the campaign.

Playing their third game in nine days, Bay FC made seven changes to the starting lineup from their match on May 1 against Portland Thorns FC. Caroline Conti made her first professional start in the match, while the Bay FC lineup featured three 2024 NWSL Draft picks,

Bay FC grabbed an early lead through Tess Boade in the eighth minute of the match, scoring the earliest goal in Bay FC history. It marked the eighth straight match with a goal for Bay FC. The next two goals came from Chicago as the visiting side first leveled the match in the 30th minute, sending the two teams into the halftime break tied at 1-1 behind a goal from the Red Stars' Penelope Hocking. Chicago grabbed the lead in the 63rd minute through a long-distance shot by Ally Schlegel.

Goalkeeper Katelyn Rowland came up big late in the game, saving her second career penalty kick. In the 80th minute, the Red Stars were awarded a spot kick after Bay FC committed a foul inside the box. Mallory Swanson fired a shot to her right, but Rowland dove and made the save to keep it a 2-1 scoreline. Bay FC pushed for a late equalizer in the final minutes of the match and nearly found the game-tying goal as a shot from 15 yards out by Deyna Castellanos went just inches wide of the right post in the 90th minute.

Goal-Scoring Plays

BAY - Tess Boade, 8th minute: Alyssa Naeher received a back pass from her defender inside the box. Naeher attempted to clear the ball and it bounced off Boade near the edge of the six-yard box into the back of the goal.

CHI - Penelope Hocking (Sam Staab), 30th minute: Penelope Hocking found space in behind the Bay FC backline. Sam Staab played a long ball in over the top for Hocking, who dribbled just inside the box and fired a shot into the left corner of the goal.

CHI - Ally Schlegel, 63rd minute: Chicago picked up the ball off a turnover just outside the Bay FC box. Jamese Joseph's initial shot was blocked but landed at the edge of the box for Ally Schlegel, who sent a low shot into the bottom left corner of the goal.

Notes:

Bay FC made seven changes to their starting lineup from the May 1 match against Portland. Bay FC have scored in all eight of their matches this season, joining Orlando and Kansas City as the only other teams to accomplish this in 2024. Bay FC have scored in all four of their home matches this campaign. Tonight's match against Chicago marked the first time the team has not scored multiple goals in a home match. Tess Boade scored her second goal of the season. Boade is one of five Bay FC players with at least two goals this season. With her goal, Boade is one of four Bay FC players (Asisat Oshoala, Racheal Kundananji, Deyna Castellanos) with multiple goals and at least one assist this season. Bay FC's four players with multiple goals and at least one assist is the most of any team in the NWSL. Boade's goal in the eighth minute was the earliest goal in Bay FC history. Katelyn Rowland faced her first penalty kick since 2018. Rowland has saved two of the three penalty kicks she has faced in her NWSL career. Caroline Conti earned her first professional start in the match. Conti is the 20th player to earn a start for the club in 2024. Conti is the fourth rookie in Bay FC's 2024 draft class to earn a start this season. Tonight's match featured three 2024 Bay FC's rookies in the starting lineup - Conti, Savy King and Jamie Shepherd.
