Charleston Battery News Release
Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery takes on the USL First Division leading Richmond Kickers Friday Night, June 17 at Blackbaud Stadium; kick off is set for 8:00 PM. This is the second of four games scheduled between the two clubs in 2005, Richmond defeated Charleston 2-0 in game played in Richmond on May 30. The Kickers lead the USL with a record of 8-2-2, 26 points; Charleston is in 10th position with a record 3-6-2, 11 points.
The Charleston Battery enters the game on the back of its first road win of the season a 1-0 victory versus the Minnesota Thunder, last Saturday night. Rookie forward Usiel Vasquez scored the lone goal of the game, his first in a Battery uniform.
Richmond enters the game having tied 1-1 versus the Atlanta Silverbacks in a game played in Richmond last Saturday night. The Kickers took an early lead through forward Kevin Jeffrey in the first minute of the game. Former Kicker, David Hayes scored the equalizer for Atlanta in the 9th minute.
Richmond is led by sixth year head coach, Leigh Cowlishaw. Cowlishaw has been a part of the Kickers organization since its inception in 1993, helping Richmond to the "double" (USL Championship / US Open Cup) as a player in 1995. Cowlishaw took Richmond to the brink of the USL First Division Championship in 2002 as a coach but saw his team lose in OT to the Milwaukee Wave United in the final.
LIVE on Fox Soccer Channel / Military Night
Friday night's game is the being televised live on the FOX Soccer Channel. The 2005 USL FOX Soccer Channel package includes 20 games with 16 straight weeks of USL action from June 17 - October 1. The Battery vs Kickers match is the first USL televised game of the 2005 season.
Friday night is also the Charleston Battery's annual Military Appreciation Night presented by the US Army as the Battery takes on the USL leading Richmond Kickers (Blackbaud Stadium, 8:00 PM). The Army is bringing a rock-climbing wall, a display of military specialist vehicles and the US Army Jump Team will be parachuting into the stadium with the game ball. Battery to take on Menace in US Open Cup
The Charleston Battery will travel to Des Moines, IA to take on the Des Moines Menace, Wednesday, June 29 in the second round of the US open Cup; kick off is set for 7:30 PM. The Menace advanced to face the Battery by defeating the USL2 Pittsburgh Riverhounds on PK's Wednesday night. In 2004 Charleston advanced to the semi-finals of the Cup losing 1-0 in OT to MLS's Chicago Fire.
