Mariners Will Host U.S. Open Cup Second Round Match on June 29

Virginia Beach, Virginia -- U.S. Soccer announced second round pairings for the 2005 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The Mariners will host the Richmond Kickers Future (PDL) who defeated the Baltimore Colts (USASA) June 15 to advance to the June 29th match at the Sportsplex.Tickets are $10 for fans 8 and over. Season ticket holders and children 7 and under are free. Kick off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

The Future is currently tied for third place in the 54-team Premier Development League. with an undefeated record of 7-0-1 and 22 points. The Future's leading scorer, Dominic Oduro (10 goals, 3 assists, 23 points), is currently ranked third in the PDL in points. Forward Cristian Neagu is currently leading the PDL in assists with six.

Geographical pairings and host proposals received from each club determine match ups, as they will through the quarterfinals of the tournament. Possible pairings for the third round, which will match second round winners vs. 4 USL First Division teams and 4 MLS teams, will be announced after the completion of the first round being played on June 15. The fourth round will be played August 3 against third round winners plus eight MLS teams.

All 12 MLS teams will be part of the 42-team field with four clubs joining the tournament in the third round on July 13. All eligible USL First Division teams, six of nine USL Second Division teams and eight PDL teams qualified for the 2005 tournament. Regional qualifying narrowed down the field of USASA teams to eight.

At stake in the tournament is $180,000 in prize money: $100,000 to the champion, $50,000 to the runner up and $10,000 to the team that advances deepest in the tournament from each of the Division II, Division III and amateur levels.

The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, the U.S. Soccer Federation's National Championship is an annual competition open to all amateur and professional soccer teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. It is the oldest annual team tournament in U.S. sports history and among the oldest soccer tournament of its type in the world.

The Mariners' next regular season match is June 24 when Virginia Beach hosts Atlanta at the Sportsplex at 8 p.m. The game will be televised live on Fox Soccer Channel. For tickets to this or any Mariners' match, please call 757-430-9800.
