Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery hosts the league-leading Montreal Impact this Saturday night at Blackbaud Stadium; kick off is set for 7:30 PM. The Battery (7-10-3) enters the game on the back of a 2-1 win versus the Puerto Rico Islanders in a game played at Blackbaud last Friday night. This is the second of two scheduled games between the two clubs this season, the Impact (10-0-5) defeated the Battery 4-2 in game played in Montreal on June 22nd.
Saturday night's game features the last two USL First Division Champions. The Battery defeated Minnesota 3-0 to win the 2003 title; the Impact defeated Seattle 2-0 to capture the 2004 title. Montreal enters the game with the best record in the league and is unbeaten heading into a Friday night match with the Atlanta Silverbacks.
The Impact has lost two starters in the last week selling forward Ali Gerba to Swedish outfit Sundsvall F.C. and midfielder Sandro Grande to Danish club, Viking F.C. Both players featured for the Canadian Men's National team in the recent Gold Cup matches.
In the previous meeting between Charleston and Montreal in June the Impact took a 2-0 first half lead. Charleston fought back to 2-2 with goals from Josh Smith and an own-goal from Montreal. After conceding a third via a Sandro Grande free-kick the Battery fought back again hitting the post before letting a fourth goal in with seconds remaining.
Ben Hollingsworth named to Team of the Week
Charleston Battery rookie defender Ben Hollingsworth has been named to the USL First Division Team of the Week following his last minute game winning goal versus the Islanders last weekend. Hollingsworth connected with a Lazo Alavanja free-kick in the 89th minute to lift Charleston to its 7th win of the season.
A native of Mount Pleasant, SC Hollingsworth led the College of Charleston offense in 2004 with 9 goals and 1 assist in 22 games played. Hollingsworth's four-year totals at the College of Charleston include 73 games played, 16 goals and 14 assists. Hollingsworth, 5-11, 180 lbs., 22 years attended Bishop England High School for two years; he also was a student at US Soccer's national residency program in Bradenton, Florida.
Aloha Night
The Charleston Battery is hosting an Aloha Night celebration this Saturday as the Battery welcomes the reigning USL First Division champions the Montreal Impact to Blackbaud Stadium; gates open at 6:30 PM with kick off set for 7:30 PM. The first 800 fans through the turnstiles will receive a free lei, there will be special Mai-Tai's available on the stadium concourse plus at half-time one lucky fan will be a winner in a limbo competition.
