Battery to battle Rhinos

Charleston, SC - The Charleston Battery welcomes the Rochester Raging Rhinos to Blackbaud Stadium, Friday night, kick off is set for 7:30 PM. This is the third and final meeting between the two Clubs in the 2004 A-League season. The Rhinos defeated the Battery 1-0 on July 11 then Charleston came from behind to secure a 1-1 tie in the second match of the series, last Sunday night; both games were played at Frontier Field. The Battery also played the Rhinos in the US Open Cup winning by a score of one goal to none to secure a berth in the semi-final of US Soccer's National Championship.

Rochester enters the game in third position in the Eastern Conference with a record of 13-8-3, 42 points. The top four teams in the Conference advance to the post-season. The Battery is no longer in playoff contention with a record of 3-15-6, 15 points, last position in the Conference.

The Rhinos roster includes two ex-Battery players. Seneca, SC native, defender John Wilson and midfielder Ryan Trout signed with the Rhinos in the off-season. Both players were members of Charleston's 2003 A-League Championship winning team.

The Battery roster includes two ex-Rhinos, forward Gabe Valencia was dealt to Rochester late in the 2003 season while forward Greg Simmonds was a Rhino in 2002. Last year the Battery defeated the Rhinos in the Eastern Conference Championship series on its way to the Club's first ever A-League Championship.

The Rhinos are led by head coach Pat Ercoli who has been at the helm since the Rhinos inception in 1996. Ercoli has led Rochester to three A-League Championships plus the US Open Cup title in 1999. Rochester remains the only A-League team to have won the Open Cup since MLS joined the competition in 1996.

It's Back to School night at Blackbaud on Friday brought to you by the South Carolina Education Lottery.
