USL Fox Sports World Game of the Week

August 12, 2004 - USL First Division (USL-1) News Release

Salty Dogs @ Lynx

This Friday's live USL on Fox Sports World A-League match takes place at Centennial Stadium in Toronto, Ontario as the Syracuse Salty Dogs take on the Toronto Lynx. Kickoff is set for 8:00 pm ET.

Syracuse Salty Dogs (11-7-5)

The Salty Dogs currently sit in a tie for fourth place in the Eastern Conference with Atlanta. With the top four teams advancing to the postseason and five games left in the season, every match is critical for Syracuse, who is also contending with Virginia Beach, which is two points back.

Anthony Maher is the Salty Dogs leading goal scorer with five on the season for 10 points. Teammates Machel Millwood and Christopher Dore are also helping out with 11 points each. The club's defense, however, has currently allowed the league's fourth fewest goals with goalkeeper Byron Foss leading the way with a 0.90 goals against average, ranking fifth in the league.

Toronto Lynx (8-12-1)

The Lynx are still in playoff contention with seven games remaining and are coming off a 2-0 victory over the Western Conference leading Vancouver Whitecaps.

The Salty Dogs defense will be tested by striker Ali Gerba, who leads the team in scoring with 12 goals and 3 assists, ranking fourth in the league in goals and points.

History

This is the second meeting between the two teams this season, with Toronto edging out the Salty Dogs 1-0 earlier this season in Syracuse on a goal from Gerba. The two will meet for the third and final time Saturday in Syracuse. Syracuse won the season series last year with a 2-1-1 record.

Special Guest

Ethan Zohn, winner of Survivor: Africa, will be the sideline reporter for this match. Ethan won $1 million for being the sole survivor back in January of 2002. He now dedicates his free time to charity organizations, including Grassroot Soccer, an international AIDS awareness and education organization.
