Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC News Release
CHARLESTON, S.C. - Mike Azira scored both goals as the Charleston Battery took a 2-0 victory against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds on Saturday night at Blackbaud Stadium. Azira scored in either half of an entertaining contest as the Riverhounds remained winless to open the season.
Neither side was able to gain the upper hand until the 24th minute, when the Battery took the lead. Azira was able to head home after a scramble in front of net for his first goal of the season, and the Battery would hold onto their lead until the halftime break.
Pittsburgh came close to tying the game in the 52nd minute, only for a header to go off the Battery's crossbar, and the Battery were able to double their lead with just under half-an-hour to play as Azira was able to run onto a pass by Zach Prince and make it 2-0.
The Riverhounds pushed forward to try and get back into the game, and were able to put pressure on Odisnal Cooper's goal, Rich Costanzo's cross finding Jhonny Arteaga for a header that went wide with just under five minutes to play. Cooper also made a fine save in the final minute, turning a redirected shot over the crossbar to preserve his shutout.
The Riverhounds conclude their five-game road trip out west, starting with a contest against Phoenix FC on Friday night at 10:30 p.m.
