Charleston Battery News Release
Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery squares off with the Miami FC Blues this Friday night at Blackbaud Stadium in the Battery's final regular season home game; gates open at 6:00 PM with kick off set for 8:00 PM. The Battery (12-5-10, 46 points) has clinched a berth in the 2009 playoffs and will be looking to bounce back from last weekend's disappointing 3-1 loss versus the Minnesota Thunder.
The Miami FC Blues (8-15-4, 28 points) enters the game in 8th position, eight points behind the Vancouver Whitecaps; the top seven teams advance to the post-season. Miami's last game was a 2-1 home defeat to the Rochester Rhinos in a game played on Tuesday evening.
The Battery enters the game on the back of a 3-1 loss versus the Minnesota Thunder in a game played last Sunday at Blackbaud Stadium. Charleston Battery forward Randi Patterson scored first but the Thunder rallied scoring three unanswered goals to hand the Battery its second home loss of the year.
The game featured two debuts as goalkeeper Chris McClellan and midfielder Jamie Franks both saw their first action for the Battery. McClellan and Franks spent the 2009 season with the USL2 Wilmington Hammerheads.
Charleston Battery head coach Mike Anhaeuser should have several additional players available for selection Friday night as Ian Fuller returns from suspension and Stephen Armstrong returns from injury.
The Battery will be looking to complete a season series sweep over the Blues on Friday night. Charleston defeated Miami 1-0 on May 5 and May 20 in USL1 play. Charleston also knocked the Blues out of the US Open Cup with a 1-0 road victory on June 16.
Miami recently added U20 men's national team defender Gale Agbossoumonde to its squad. A native of Syracuse, NY Agbossoumonde is a part of the US team that will compete in the upcoming FIFA U20 World Cup that starts September 24 in Egypt.
Miami is led by second-year head coach Zinho, a former Miami FC Blues player whose career as a player including winning the World Cup with Brazil in 1994. Zinho made 57 total appearances for the Brazilian national team.
