
Battery Readies for Portland

Charleston Battery News Release
Charleston, SC - The Charleston Battery plays the Portland Timbers Friday night at Blackbaud Stadium; kick off is set for 8:00 PM. Charleston (2-3-3, 9 points, 6th place Eastern Conference) will be looking for its first win since May 11 while Portland (5-0, 15 points 1st Western Conference) is off to a flying start to the season with five wins out of five games played. This is the only match scheduled between the two clubs in the 2004 season.
The Timbers are led by fourth-year Head Coach, Bobby Howe. Howe has led the Timbers to a winning record in each of his previous three years while compiling an overall mark of 46-33-8. A native of England Howe played eleven years for West Ham United before coming to the US to serve as an Assistant Coach at the NASL Seattle Sounders. Howe's Assistant Coach is Jimmy Conway, Father of Charleston Battery striker Paul Conway.
Portland's offense is led by current A-League Player of the Week, forward Alan Gordon. Gordon scored three goals in Portland's 3-2 win last weekend versus the Milwaukee Wave United. The hat-trick gave Gordon the Player of the Week honor for a second consecutive week with five goals in his last two games and six on the year.
The Battery has played the Timbers on one previous occasion losing 2-0 in August 2001 in a game played in Portland.
Charleston defender Mark Watson will be available for selection Friday night having returned from National Team duty with Canada. Watson played 90 minutes in Canada's 1-0 loss to Wales in game played last Sunday in Wales.

Friday night is Fan Frenzy Night with free Cheerstix for the first 500 fans through the turnstiles brought to you by the Queen Anne's Revenge Restaurant. The game is also the first TV game of the 2004 season and will be broadcast live on FOX Sports World.
