Vancouver Whitecaps News Release
The Whitecaps Men lost a close road game, going down 1-0 in sudden death overtime to the Minnesota Thunder. Striker Melvin Tarley scored the game's only goal nine minutes into OT to hand Vancouver their second loss of the season.
The Whitecaps' record falls to 3-2-1 for 10 points, as Vancouver remains in third place in the Western Conference, now 5 points behind Minnesota at 4-1-3. The Thunder remain in second place, tied on points with leaders Portland who have played three fewer games.
The Whitecaps conclude their two-game road trip Friday when they visit the winless Milwaukee Wave United.
Game Notes
Carlo Corazzin had Vancouver's best chance to score at 12' when goalkeeper Warren got caught out position on a throw-in. However, Corazzin's shot at a near-empty goal was blocked on the line by midfielder Jeff Matteo. Corazzin limped off the field two minutes later and was replaced by Davide Xausa.
Minnesota goalkeeper Josh Warren recorded his league-leading seventh shutout of the season, and sixth in a row.
The Whitecaps changed goalkeepers at half-time, with Alex Marques replacing Mike Franks to see his first action of the season.
Vancouver out-shot Minnesota 8-3 in the first half, while Minnesota were the stronger side in the second half, and had the overall edge in shots 14-12.
Vancouver defeated Minnesota 2-1 on overtime at Swangard earlier in the season, making the Whitecaps the only team to defeat Minnesota this season or to score a goal against them.
