
Battery plays Sounders Thursday night at Blackbaud

Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery (3-2-3) plays the Seattle Sounders (3-4-3) Thursday night at Blackbaud Stadium; gates open at 6:30 with kick off set for 7:30 ($8 - $15, 971-GOAL / charlestonbattery.com). The Battery enters the game on the back of a 2-1 road win versus the Minnesota Thunder in a game played last Saturday night in St Paul.
The Battery earned four points last week during its westward travels, drawing the expansion California Victory 1-1 in San Francisco on Wednesday then beating the Minnesota Thunder 2-1. Charleston is now unbeaten in three consecutive game and if it wins on Thursday will rise to tie for third position in the USL First Division standings.
Seattle (3-4-3) is currently tied with the Battery with 12 points on the season but has played two more games. Thursday's game is the first of a three game trip through the Southeast. The Sounders face Atlanta on Saturday and are at the Carolina Railhawks on June 15.
Seattle enters the game coming off a 2-1 win over California last Saturday in San Francisco. Greg Howes and Roger Levesque scored for the Sounders. It was the Sounder's second consecutive victory after beating Carolina 1-0 at home last Wednesday.
Three named to USL First Division Team of the Week
Three Charleston Battery players were named to the USL First Division Team of the Week following the successful road trip last week. Midfielders Stephen Armstrong and Lazo Alavanja were both honored as was Battery striker Byron Alvarez. Alvarez's two goals on Saturday versus Minnesota elevated him into a tie for second in the league top scorer table.

Coming up -International Exhibition & US Open Cup
On Saturday the Battery face the Jamaican Premier League's Village United in a special International Soccer Exhibition. This is the second consecutive year the two clubs have met. The Battery won the first meeting at Blackbaud Stadium 2-1. Village United finished seventh in the 2006-07 Wray & Nephew Premier League 12-team table.
Village United's roster includes Christopher Dawes and Theodore Whitmore, who both were on the Reggae Boys 1998 World Cup side, and also includes current Jamaica National Team members William Wilson, Kirk Hendricks, and Jeff Pearce. Village United also features Newton Sterling, who played for the Battery during the Carolina Challenge Cup, scoring the tying goal in the Battery's 1-1 draw versus Houston.
All seats are general admission. Tickets are $10 box / $5 bleacher ($5 for season ticket holders). There is no charge for children under 14. Gates open at 6:30p.m. Kickoff is at 7:30.
On Tuesday Night (June 12) the Battery begins its quest for the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup with a first round fixture versus the PDL Central Florida Kraze. Based in Winter Park, Florida, the amateur side is currently in second place in the Southeast Division going 4-1-0 so far this season.
Last year, the Battery advanced to the fourth round of tournament before falling to MLS' F.C. Dallas on penalty kick after playing to a 3-3 draw at Blackbaud Stadium. Kickoff is at 7:30p.m. Tickets are $10, $5 for season ticket holders.
