Seattle Sounders News Release
The Seattle Sounders will face Banat Arsenal, a member of the United States Amateur Soccer Association (USASA), from Phoenix, Arizona, at the Starfire Sports Entertainment Complex on June 12 at 8pm in the first round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
The match will be played as the second part of a double header with the Crossfire Sounders Women, who host the San Diego Sunwave at 6pm, and tickets will cost just $7 to watch both matches and are only available through the Sounders ticket office at 206-622.3415 or at the gate on the night of the match. Parking at the Starfire facility will cost $8 the night of the match.
Gates open at 5pm and Sounders fans who show their ticket at Mad Pizza in the Starfire complex between 5 and 6pm will receive a free slice of pizza.
This will be the first time in two years that Sounders fans will have the chance to watch a Sounder's women's/men's double header.
The Sounders men will look to better their disappointing Open Cup result on the road in 2006 when they lost in extra time to the Carolina Dynamo from the Premier Development League. The Sounders women are battling to keep their hopes of returning to the USL W-League Final Four and better on their third place finish in 2006.
Banat Arsenal played in the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL), a nationwide amateur soccer league, until this season when they decided to play in the Football Arizona League. They qualified for the Open Cup competition by finishing as runner-up in the USASA Region IV tournament, falling by a 3-2 score line in the final to El Paso Indios from the NPSL.
The Lamar Hunt U.S Open Cup is a single elimination tournament that dates back to 1914. It is the oldest cup in U.S Soccer history and one of the oldest competitions in the world. The tournament is open to all affiliated professional and amateur teams in the country.
The winner of the June 12 match will face off against the winner of the Portland Timbers and Bakersfield Brigade match in the second round of the U.S Open Cup. The match is scheduled for June 26.
