Charleston Battery News Release
Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery takes on the Puerto Rico Islanders Saturday night at Blackbaud Stadium; kick off is set for 7:30 PM ($8 - $15, 971-GOAL / www.charlestonbattery.com). The game is the first of four between the teams in 2007; Charleston heads to Puerto Rico for a pair of games July 13 & 15. The Islanders return to Charleston on September 7 to complete the series.
The Battery (5-6-4, 19 points 6th) enters the game on the back of a 3-2 Wednesday night road loss to the Atlanta Silverbacks. Atlanta scored three goals in the first half and held on for the win as Charleston fought back in the second period. Lazo Alavanja and Aaron King scored Charleston's goals.
The Puerto Rico Islanders (3-4-6, 15 points, 10th) lost 1-0 to the Montreal Islanders in Montreal in its last league match on June 29.
Last season the Battery faced the Islanders six times, which included two games in the USL playoff quarterfinals. In six games, the Battery only managed one win, a 1-0 victory at Puerto Rico off a Stephen Armstrong goal that put the Battery through to the playoff semifinals.
Alberto Zapata leads the Islanders in scoring with four goals, followed by Noah Delgado with three goals on the season.
In May, Colin Clarke was appointed head coach of the Islanders. Last year, Clarke was the head coach of the F.C. Dallas club that eliminated the Battery from the U.S. Open Cup on penalty kicks at Blackbaud Stadium. Since Clarke took the helm, the Islanders have gone 2-1-3.
Stephen Armstrong was named to the USL First Division Team of the Week for his free kick goal in last weeks 1-1 draw with Vancouver. The goal puts him in a four-way tie for third place on the league scoring list with five goals on the season. Byron Alvarez is in second place with six goals.
