Charleston Battery News Release

Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery closes out a three-match home stand on Saturday at Blackbaud Stadium with a 7:30 PM match versus the Pittsburgh Riverhounds. Pittsburgh is the only side so far in USL2 to have held Charleston scoreless. The Battery (4-0-1, 13 points) enters the game in first place in USL2 and is still unbeaten on the season. Charleston was held to a 0-0 tie by the Riverhounds at Blackbaud Stadium on April 24 in a game that saw Riverhounds goalkeeper Hunter Gilstrap save a penalty.

Saturday's match is the Charleston Battery's annual 'Thank You Heroes Night' presented by Force Protection and all first responders (military, police, firefighters and EMT) receive complimentary admission to the match courtesy of Force Protection.

The Battery defeated the Harrisburg City Islanders 3-1 last Saturday night at Blackbaud Stadium. Rookie forward Lamar Neagle opened the scoring and Rudolph Mayard added two more as Charleston won its third straight game.

Mayard was named the USL2 Player of the Week following his two-goal performance with defenders John Wilson and Nigel Marples also honored on the USL2 Team of the Week.

Charleston Battery head coach should have Jamaican defender O'Brian Woodbine back available for selection on Saturday. Woodbine missed the match versus Harrisburg with a quad strain.

The win versus the City Islanders extended Charleston's lead at the top of the USL2 tables to seven points.

Pittsburgh is also still unbeaten on the season with three ties from their three games played. The Riverhounds had 1-0 lead over Richmond in their last match but the Kickers scored a 90th minute equalizer to deny Pittsburgh their first win of the season.

Former Charleston Battery midfielder Justin Evans took over as head coach of the Riverhounds during the off-season. Evans played in 2002, 2004 & 2005 for the Battery for a total of 88 games scoring five goals and adding six assists.

Saturday's match will be the eleventh all time meeting between the clubs; the series record stands at 3-3-4 heading into the game. Pittsburgh's roster includes two former Battery players, midfielder Louis Rolko and defender Jason Kutney.
