Charleston Battery News Release
Charleston, SC - The Charleston Battery takes on the Richmond Kickers Saturday night at Blackbaud Stadium in it's first home match of the 2004 season; kick off is set for 7:30 PM. Last weekend the Battery defeated the Kickers by a score of two goals to none in the season opener in a game played in Richmond. Saturday's game is the second of four scheduled matches between the two Eastern Conference rivals in the 2004 season.
Former Kicker Greg Simmonds scored the first goal of last Saturday's match in the 32nd minute, slotting home past Kickers goalkeeper, Ronnie Pascale. Simmonds was also involved in the second goal as his right-footed shot rebounded off the cross bar for Battery midfielder Chris Goos to finish. Simmonds was named A-League Player of the week following his stand-out performance.
Richmond is led by five-year head coach, Leigh Cowlishaw. Cowlishaw has an overall regular season record of 72-39-21 and led the Kickers to the 2002 A-League Championship match. The Burton-On-Trent, England native has been a part of the Richmond Kickers organization since its inception in 1993.
The Kickers offense will once again be led by forward, Kevin Jeffrey. Jeffrey led the team in scoring in 2003 with 10 goals and 9 assists, 29 points.
Richmond strengthened its squad in the off season with the signing of former US National Team midfielder, Richie Williams. Williams joins Richmond after eight years in Major League Soccer. This will be his second stint in a Kickers uniform; he played for Richmond prior to MLS's inception.
In 2003 the Battery also played Richmond four times winning twice with one loss and a tie. Charleston again opened its season in Richmond winning that game by a score of two goals to none.
