Charleston (SC) - The Charlotte Independence fell to interstate rivals Charleston Battery on Saturday night. The loss marks a fifth-consecutive game the Independence has gone without a win.
Short of starters, Kevan George, Donnie Smith, Jungsoo Lee, Greg Jordan and Kay Voser, the Independence held Charleston to one shot in the first 45 minutes. Unfortunately, the Battery found the back of the net in the 31st minute when Battery forward Gordon Wild found teamate Ataulla Gurrera for his third score in four games. In the 50th minute, Independence captain and defender Bilal Duckett was subbed off with an apparent injury. Late in the second half, as the Independence were pushing players forward for an equalizer, the Battery's counter-attack resulted in Independence defender Henry Kalungi being shown a second yellow card. In the 87th minute, Battery substitution Victor Mansaray sealed the win by adding a second goal.
