Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release
When you are in a tight race for a playoff spot like the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors are, one point is a lot better than none.
Andreas Tsogkas scored the winning goal in the eighth round of the shootout as the Brampton Battalion edged the Majors 3-2 on Friday night at the Hershey Centre, denying the Majors the extra point in yet another tight battle between the Peel Region rivals.
Sam Carrick with his 30th goal of the season and Mitchell Porowski scored the goals in regulation for Brampton, which remained in third place in the East with the victory. Matej Machovsky made 25 saves in goal for the Battalion, who out-shot the Majors 49-27.
Jamie Wise scored his 20th goal and added an assist and Mika Partanen scored the other goal for Mississauga, while Brandon Maxwell was outstanding in goal, turning aside 47 shots in regulation and six of eight in the shootout.
The single point leaves the Majors alone in seventh place in the Eastern Conference with 55 points. They are two back of sixth place Oshawa, one point ahead of eighth place Peterborough and two up on ninth place Belleville, with the Majors playing the Bulls in Belleville on Saturday night.
"I thought it took us a little time to get going, which is usually the case when we play Brampton, but once we got going I thought we played pretty well," General Manager/Coach James Boyd said. "We battled hard and I think both teams played well.
"With the standings so tight we really need to pick up points wherever we can get them, so it's crucial to get something out of games like this. Maxwell stopped a lot of shots for us and we battled back to tie the game, so there were definitely some positives."
Brampton carried the play during the first period, out-shooting the Majors 16-8, but it was the Majors that scored the lone goal of the opening 20 minutes when Partanen tallied his 15th of the year at 16:08 on the power play.
Sam Carrick tied the game at 3:33 of the second period, leaving the teams tied 1-1 after two periods, even though Brampton enjoyed a 26-14 shot advantage after 40 minutes of play.
The Battalion again out-shot the Majors in the third period, 19-12, but couldn't win in regulation even though they did take a 2-1 lead on Porowski's goal at 3:04 of the third.
Wise tied the game with just 5:32 to go in regulation time, setting the stage for a scoreless overtime and an eight round shootout, in which the Battalion scored twice to the Majors one.
Mississauga was 1-for-4 on the power play while the Battalion failed to score in their three chances with the extra man.
The Majors travel to Belleville Saturday night for a crucial game against the Bulls. They return home on Family Day at 2 p.m. to host the Sudbury Wolves at the Hershey Centre.
