BRAMPTON, Ont. - The Brampton Battalion has acquired centre John Hughes from the Belleville Bulls for disgruntled left winger Aaron Snow, the Ontario Hockey League club announced Monday.

Belleville also received a conditional sixth-round pick in the 2009 OHL Priority Selection for Snow, who left the Battalion on Oct. 19 after requesting a trade.

Hughes, a Whitby, Ont., resident who turns 19 on Jan. 6, was the first overall pick in the 2004 OHL Priority Selection from the Whitby Wildcats minor midgets. He has three goals and 17 assists for 20 points in 14 games this season.

"John's a dynamic player and a skilled offensive centre," said Stan Butler, Battalion director of hockey operations and head coach. "He's a point generator, and the good thing for us is he's the same age as Aaron. So even though we lost a good 1988-birth player I think we picked up a pretty good one, too.

"We need a good player for our lineup so we can move on, and for Aaron hopefully he can move forward too and get his career moving in a positive direction."

The five-foot-nine, 185-pound Hughes played 60 games as a rookie in 2004-05, scoring 13 goals and earning 18 assists for 31 points. He had 28 goals and 54 assists for 82 points in 66 games last season.

Hughes, a right shot, played 10 OHL playoff games over two seasons, scoring one goal and earning five assists for six points. He had one goal and four assists as the Battalion beat the Bulls in a six-game Eastern Conference quarterfinal last season.

Snow, a second-round pick, 23rd overall, in the 2004 OHL Priority Selection from the Tecumseh Chiefs of the Western Junior B League, played a total of 141 games with the Battalion, scoring 43 goals and adding 48 assists for 91 points.

Snow, an 18-year-old Windsor resident, had eight goals and seven assists for 15 points in 61 games as a rookie in 2004-05 before finishing fifth in Battalion scoring last season with 30 goals and 38 assists for 68 points in as many games. He has played 12 games this season, recording eight points, including five goals.

Snow, a third-round choice of the Dallas Stars in the National Hockey League's Entry Draft in June, played 17 playoff games with the Battalion, scoring five goals and adding four assists for nine points.
